At least 3500 people die each year in the UK from asbestos related lung cancer and mesothelioma as a result of past exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos was used extensively as a building material in the UK from the 1050s through to the mid 1980s.
Although some of this material has been removed over the years, it is estimated that many thousands of tonnes of asbestos is still present in over half a million commercial and domestic premises.
